Where did the spreadsheet you're converting actually come from?
Excel wasn't the first spreadsheet, or even Microsoft's first attempt at one. That distinction belongs to VisiCalc, built by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston in 1979 and widely credited with making the personal computer a genuine business tool rather than a hobbyist's toy. Lotus 1-2-3 took over the market in 1982 by adding charting and basic database features on top of that idea, and Microsoft's own first attempt, Multiplan (1982), couldn't compete with it. Microsoft's second attempt fared rather better: Excel launched for the Macintosh on September 30, 1985 — with its now-familiar pull-down menus and mouse-driven interface — and after a Windows version followed and Windows 3.0 took off in 1990, Excel eventually overtook Lotus 1-2-3 entirely to become the spreadsheet nearly everyone, including whoever built the file you just converted, actually uses.
