Why did Microsoft build AVI in the first place?
As a direct response to Apple. When Apple's QuickTime brought genuine multimedia video to the Macintosh in December 1991, Microsoft moved quickly to answer with its own equivalent: AVI (Audio Video Interleave), released in November 1992 as the centerpiece of a package called Video for Windows. AVI's key feature was in its name — interleaving audio and video data together in a way that let both play back in sync, a real technical achievement for early-1990s PC hardware. Bundled free with Windows 3.1 and 3.11 and later built directly into Windows 95, it became the default way an entire generation of Windows PCs recorded and played video, which is exactly why so many decades-old video files still turn up in this specific format.
